beef meatballs with ras al-hanut 

500g minced beef

1 onion, finely chopped

2 tbsp ras al-hanut 

1 tbsp coriander seeds, ground with a pestle and mortar

1 tbsp fresh sage leaves, finely chopped

1 tsp ground black pepper

1/4 tsp chilli flakes 

1 egg, beaten


plain flour

50g butter

1 x 400g tinned tomatoes

100g frozen peas

2 tbsp ras al-hanut

  • Fry onions until softened. Cool on a plate.
  • In a large bowl mix beef, cooled onions, spices, sage and egg.
  • Form into balls.
  • Roll in flour.
  • Fry in melted butter in a shallow pan until browned. 
  • Tip in the tomatoes, frozen peas and extra has al-hanut. 
  • Give the sauce a gentle stir and leave on the lowest stove setting to simmer for around 20 minutes.
