abstract art

for those who find calmness in repetition

and a point of difference engaging

. . .

words that ground, inspire and bring joy

the past few years i have undergone a deeper exploration on my sense of self more than ever before.

initially uncovering a 'label' for my point of difference (neurodivergent), and in the last months of my fiftieth year reclaiming my identity as a creative ... prompted by my word of the year 'shadow'.

shadow work, rooted in the psychology of carl jung. is not just how it is mainly represented, embracing 'the darker aspects' of personality but also bringing to light hidden or repressed strengths.

artist

a person expressing their ideas, emotions or narratives through the creation of art

i have created and written from a young age. at the age of eight my mother told me "people like us don't become writers" and i gave up art studies as a teenager when my tutor told me that i needed to "pick up the pace" in order to have 'completed' pieces for an exam portfolio. to me, expression should not be restrained by arbitrary timelines. and what is completion?

'under the wave off kanagawa' by the japanese ukiyo-e artist hokusai, took decades of evolution from initial concept to the iconic image most recognise today.

i create from intuition and my work is inspired by the simplicity of piet mondrian and opulence of gustav klimt - to me the yin and yang of modern art. if you ever get the opportunity to see a klimt in person, take it as his work is breathtaking.

working on black as i have sensory sensitivity to white. i utilise a minimalist palette, influenced by the seasons plus the calming aesthetic of blue, representing both air and water.

i like to add playful elements of paper cutting, stitching, weaving, mosaic, washi tape or stickers as these are some of my favourite activities from childhood. the stickers that i use are odd dot, images of ephemera from the victorian era which are quirky and give a nod to people's exploration of art in that period.

i am currently exploring an equitable method for people to own my art.
